Choosing the right hardwood sleepers

Sizes: 200x50 suits garden beds and low edging; 200x75 is stronger for retaining walls and longer spans between posts.
Posts: For retaining walls, pair sleepers with galvanised steel H or C posts or hardwood posts set in concrete.
Height: Retaining walls over about 1 m usually need engineering and a permit, so check with your council first.
Drainage: Lay AGI pipe and gravel behind the wall to stop water pressure building up.
Look: Hardwood weathers to a silver-grey; oil it if you want to keep the original colour.

Hardwood is heavier, stronger and naturally durable without chemical treatment. Treated pine is lighter and cheaper, and H4 pine is also rated for ground contact.
