Colorbond Post Extensions: The Smart Way to Raise Your Fence Height

Colorbond Post Extensions: The Smart Way to Raise Your Fence Height

by Harry Sandhu on Oct 07, 2026

Your Colorbond fence is solid, straight and still looks great. The only problem? It is just not tall enough anymore. Maybe the neighbours built a double-storey extension, a new deck now looks straight into your yard, or the dog has worked out how to clear the top rail.

In most cases, you do not need to. A Colorbond post extension lets you add height to your existing fence quickly and neatly, without the cost, mess and downtime of a full replacement. At A Class Building Materials, we supply Colorbond fencing and post extensions to homeowners, builders and fencing contractors across Victoria, and this is one of the most cost-effective fence upgrades we see. Here is everything you need to know.

What Is a Colorbond Post Extension?

A Colorbond post extension is a steel section designed to attach to the top of your existing Colorbond fence posts, extending them upwards so you can fit an additional infill panel, slat screen or lattice topper above the current fence line.

Because it is made to match standard Colorbond fencing posts, the finished result looks like part of the original fence rather than an afterthought.

The A Class Building Materials Colorbond Post Extension is available in two sizes:

  • 300mm extension: a subtle lift that adds privacy without making the fence feel imposing.

  • 600mm extension: a more substantial increase for screening from elevated windows, decks or second storeys.

Why Extend Instead of Replace?

If your existing fence is in good condition, extending it almost always makes more sense than replacing it.

  • Lower cost: you are buying extensions and infill only, not a whole new fence, posts and concrete.

  • Faster installation: no digging out old posts or pouring new footings in most cases.

  • Less waste: your existing panels stay in place, which is better for your budget and the environment.

  • Minimal disruption: your yard stays secure and your pets stay contained while the work is done.

  • Seamless finish: matching Colorbond colours keep the fence looking uniform.

Top Reasons to Add Height to Your Fence

More Privacy

This is the number one reason. New builds, second-storey extensions and raised decks can suddenly leave your backyard, pool area or living spaces exposed. Even an extra 300mm can block sightlines from a neighbour's ground floor or a passing footpath.

Better Security

A taller fence is harder to climb, which makes it a simple and effective deterrent for unwanted visitors and helps protect tools, bikes and outdoor gear.

Keeping Pets In

Agile dogs can be surprisingly good jumpers. Adding height to the fence is one of the easiest ways to stop escape attempts and keep your pets safe at home.

Wind and Noise Protection

In exposed areas and on busy streets, extra height can help shelter outdoor living spaces from wind and soften traffic noise.

Choosing the Right Colour

A post extension only looks right if it matches the fence it is sitting on. The A Class Building Materials Colorbond Post Extension comes in a wide range of popular Colorbond fencing colours, including:

  • Neutrals: Surfmist, Paperbark, Dune, Evening Haze, Riversand, Shale Grey.

  • Greys and charcoals: Woodland Grey, Basalt, Monument, Ironstone, Wallaby, Domain.

  • Darks: Night Sky, Jasper, Deep Ocean.

  • Greens and earthy tones: Pale Eucalypt, Wilderness, Cottage Green, Bushland, Harvest, Manor Red.

Not sure what colour your fence is? Older fences can fade slightly over time, so compare against a colour chart in daylight, or bring a photo into our warehouse and our team can help you match it.

Know the Height Rules Before You Extend

This is the most important step, and it is the one people most often skip. In Victoria, side and rear boundary fences can generally be built up to 2 metres high without a building permit. Anything above that usually needs one.

That matters because most Colorbond fences are around 1.8 metres high:

  • A 1.8m fence plus a 300mm extension comes out at 2.1 metres.

  • A 1.8m fence plus a 600mm extension comes out at 2.4 metres.

Both are over the 2-metre limit, so you may need a building permit before you start. Front fences and corner blocks have lower limits again. Read our full guide to fence height regulations in Victoria, and check with your local council or a registered building surveyor before you buy.

If the fence is shared with a neighbour, talk to them first as well. Under the Fences Act 1968, changes to a dividing fence are best agreed in writing, and if the extra height is for your benefit, you may be expected to cover the cost.

Is Your Existing Fence Strong Enough?

Adding height means adding surface area, and more surface area means more wind load on your posts and footings. Before you extend, walk the fence line and check:

  • Posts are straight, firm and not rocking in the ground.

  • Footings are solid, with no cracked or crumbling concrete.

  • There is no significant rust at the base of posts or panels.

  • Panels and rails are secure, with no missing fixings.

If posts are leaning or footings are failing, fix those first. A 600mm extension on a weak fence in a windy spot is asking for trouble. On exposed sites, ask for advice on whether extra post support is needed.

How Installation Works

Installing Colorbond post extensions is a manageable job for a confident DIYer, though many homeowners prefer to have a fencing contractor do it. The general process looks like this:

  • Measure your fence line and count every post, including end and corner posts.

  • Confirm the height you need and any permit requirements.

  • Fit the extension to the top of each post and secure it with suitable screws, keeping everything plumb and level.

  • Install your chosen infill between the extended posts, such as a Colorbond panel, slat screen or lattice.

  • Check alignment along the full run, then tidy up and remove any metal swarf so it cannot rust on the paintwork.

Always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions and wear gloves and eye protection when working with sheet steel.

Infill Options for Your Extension

  • Solid Colorbond infill: maximum privacy and a uniform look.

  • Slat screen: a modern, architectural finish that lets light and air through.

  • Lattice: a softer, decorative option that works well with climbing plants.
