A Class Building Materials — FAQs

What type of fence post do I need for in-ground installation?

For any post going into the ground, you need H4 treated pine at minimum. H4 is rated for in-ground contact and handles the moisture and soil conditions common across Victoria's clay-heavy western suburbs and regional areas. Standard post depth is 600mm minimum for standard fencing, increasing to 900mm for taller or exposed runs. For Colorbond fencing, steel posts are the default and are designed to pair directly with the rail and sheet system.

What is Colorbond fencing and why is it popular in Victoria?

Colorbond is BlueScope Steel's pre-painted steel fencing system, and it's the most popular residential and commercial fence type in Victoria. It's low-maintenance, bushfire-rated in certain profiles (BAL compliant options available), and holds up well against Melbourne's UV and coastal salt exposure in areas like Point Cook and Geelong. It comes in a wide range of standard Colorbond colours including Ironstone, Monument, Woodland Grey and Surfmint.

How deep should Colorbond fence posts be set?

Posts should be set a minimum of 600mm into the ground for standard 1.8m Colorbond fencing. For 2.1m or taller fencing, or on exposed or windy sites, increase depth to 900mm and consider concreting the post. Posts should be spaced no more than 2.4m apart for structural integrity. Always check your local council requirements before installing.

What's the difference between aluminium and Colorbond fencing?

Colorbond is a steel-based system offering strength and a traditional fence look, while aluminium fencing is lighter, fully rust-proof, and better suited to pool fencing, decorative applications, and coastal environments. Aluminium won't corrode even in high-moisture or salt-air locations like Point Cook or Werribee South. Colorbond is generally more cost-effective for large runs, while aluminium suits pool compliance and premium residential work.

What treated pine fence palings are available?

A Class stocks treated pine palings in a range of lengths and widths, typically 100mm, 150mm and 200mm wide in H3 treatment for above-ground use. H3 is rated for exterior above-ground use including exposure to weather, making it the standard for paling fences. Posts and in-ground components should always step up to H4.

Do I need council approval to build a fence in Victoria?

In Victoria, a standard boundary fence up to 2m high generally does not require a building permit, but you must comply with the Fences Act 1968 regarding shared boundaries and neighbour notifications. Fences over 2m, front fences over 1.2m in most zones, and fences in bushfire-prone areas will likely require a permit. Always check with your local council before starting — rules vary between Melbourne's western growth corridors and regional areas like Ballarat and Bendigo.

What length Colorbond sheets does A Class carry?

A Class Building Materials stocks Colorbond sheets in standard lengths including 1800mm, 2100mm and 2400mm. Custom lengths may be available by order depending on the profile. For large projects, speak to our trade team to confirm availability and lead times.

Decking

What is the best decking timber for outdoor use in Victoria?

Merbau is the most popular hardwood decking choice in Victoria due to its natural durability, rich reddish-brown colour, and resistance to decay and insect attack. It's typically available in 19mm thickness (standard board) and is rated Class 1 or 2 for above-ground durability. For lower-maintenance or budget builds, treated pine decking is a solid alternative, while composite decking suits homeowners wanting a near-zero maintenance option.

What thickness is standard Merbau decking?

Standard Merbau decking boards are 19mm thick, which is the industry-standard dimension for residential and commercial decks. The most common widths are 86mm and 136mm face width. Boards should be fixed with a 5mm gap between them to allow for drainage and expansion.

How much decking do I need to order?

Calculate your deck area in square metres, then add 10–15% for waste from cutting, defects and board selection. For Merbau at 86mm face width with a 5mm gap, you'll need approximately 10.9 lineal metres per square metre of deck area. Our trade team can help with a take-off if you supply your plans or dimensions.

What is composite decking and is it worth it?

Composite decking is manufactured from a blend of timber fibre and recycled plastic, giving it a wood-like appearance with significantly lower maintenance requirements — no oiling, staining, or sealing needed. It's resistant to moisture, splintering and fading, making it ideal for pool surrounds, shaded areas, and clients who want a set-and-forget finish. The upfront cost is higher than Merbau or treated pine, but lifetime maintenance costs are considerably lower.

What joist spacing should I use for Merbau decking?

For 19mm Merbau, joist spacing should be 450mm centres maximum for a solid, bounce-free deck. In high-traffic or commercial applications, bring joists to 400mm centres. Joists in contact with or close to the ground should be H3 or H4 treated pine depending on their proximity to soil.

What oil should I use on a Merbau deck?

New Merbau should be cleaned to remove tannin bleed before oiling — allow the deck to weather for 4–6 weeks before the first oil application. Use a quality penetrating hardwood oil in a warm-toned finish to enhance the natural colour. Reapply every 12–18 months depending on sun and rain exposure in your area.

Can I use treated pine for decking?

Yes. Treated pine decking is an economical and popular choice for residential decks. Use H3 treated pine for above-ground decking boards, and H4 for any structural members (bearers, joists) near or in contact with the ground. Treated pine requires regular oiling or sealing to maintain appearance and extend its service life.

Sleepers & Retaining Walls

What sleepers are best for retaining walls?

H4 treated pine sleepers are the most cost-effective and widely used option for retaining walls in Victoria. H4 is rated for in-ground contact and soil retention. For a more premium look or longer lifespan, concrete sleepers are a strong alternative that won't rot, warp or move over time. Hardwood sleepers (such as ironbark) are also an option for above-ground garden bed applications.

What size treated pine sleepers are available?

A Class stocks treated pine sleepers in the most common dimensions: 200mm x 75mm and 200mm x 50mm in H4 treatment, in lengths of 2.4m. Larger structural sizes may be available — contact your nearest store for current stock. Always confirm treatment level (H4) when ordering for in-ground or retaining wall use.

How deep should sleeper retaining wall posts be set?

As a general rule, posts should be embedded to one-third of their total length. For a wall using 2.4m posts, that means at least 800mm in the ground. For walls over 1m in height, you may require engineering sign-off and a building permit in Victoria — check with your local council. Posts should be set in concrete for walls under lateral load.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Victoria?

In Victoria, retaining walls over 1m in height typically require a building permit. Walls over 800mm adjacent to a property boundary or in a flood or bushfire zone may also trigger permit requirements depending on your local council. Always check with your council or a registered building surveyor before constructing a significant retaining wall. A Class can supply the materials — we recommend using a licensed contractor for walls requiring permits.

Can I use concrete sleepers for raised garden beds?

Yes. Concrete sleepers are an excellent choice for raised garden beds. They won't rot, swell or bow under moisture and soil pressure, and require no ongoing maintenance. They're available in a range of finishes including woodgrain and smooth. Ensure proper drainage at the base to prevent waterlogging.

What is the difference between H3 and H4 treated pine?

H3 treated pine is rated for above-ground exterior use where the timber is exposed to weather but not in contact with the ground. H4 is rated for in-ground contact, including posts, sleepers and piers. Using H3 in-ground will result in premature decay. Always use H4 for any timber below or at ground level.

Cladding & Timber

What cladding options does A Class supply?

A Class Building Materials stocks a range of cladding products including treated pine weatherboards, fibre cement sheet, and structural timber cladding profiles. Options suit both new construction and renovation work across residential and light commercial projects in Victoria. For specific profiles, widths and availability, contact your nearest store or speak to our trade team.

Is fibre cement cladding bushfire-rated?

Many fibre cement cladding products carry BAL ratings (Bushfire Attack Level), with some products rated up to BAL-FZ. If you're building or renovating in a designated bushfire-prone area — common in parts of the Ballarat and Bendigo regions — your cladding must meet the BAL rating specified in your planning permit. Always verify the specific product's certification against your site's BAL rating.

What structural timber does A Class supply?

A Class stocks a comprehensive range of structural timber including MGP10 and MGP12 framing timber, F7 and F17 hardwood, H2 treated pine for termite-prone areas, and LVL (laminated veneer lumber) for longer spans. Sizes range from standard 90x45 framing up to large section hardwood for beams and lintels.

What is MGP10 framing timber used for?

MGP10 (Machine Graded Pine, stress grade 10) is the standard framing timber for most residential construction in Victoria. It's used for wall frames, roof trusses, floor joists and rafters where standard structural loads apply. MGP12 is used where higher loads or longer spans are required. Always follow your engineer's specifications for the correct stress grade.
